Currently, California State University, Stanislaus (Stan State), is hosting Noah Wilson’s art exhibition “A Lonely Hunter” at the University Art Gallery that included an Artist’s Talk event on Feb. 18.
Wilson’s exhibition was eclectic and deliberately didn’t go together. During his artist talk, Wilson explained that his artwork varied from pictures of moments in his life to pictures of YouTube videos on his computer.
“Investigating how to look at pictures and interpret pictures as a way to try to understand the natural world and wilderness and also trying to reflect on how photography has sort of shaped our impressions of nature and wilderness,” Wilson said when asked to describe his artwork.
Wilson’s passion for art was born during his time as an undergraduate English major at Humboldt State University.
“I had a roommate who was doing photography and the lab up there was really lax, so he just invited me to sneak in to the lab and start making pictures, and I was able to do that for a full semester before I officially recognized that I loved it and started taking classes,” Wilson said. “There was something about it that just instantly resonated for me.”
Although Wilson’s artwork at the event were only photographs, his past experiences with art have varied from being a musician to dabbling in other art forms, such as drawing and painting.
Currently, Wilson is a Photography instructor at Modesto Junior College and does art on the side. As an instructor, Wilson has the opportunity to train and inspire other aspiring artists to continue their dreams while he continues his own.
“Do the work you believe in making and want to make, and just don’t give up, just keep making it,” Wilson said. “It’s like one of the best things you can do with your life. Art making, it comes with a tremendous amount of doubt and it can be really hard for people to persevere, especially once you get out of school.”
Wilson’s exhibit, “A Lonely Hunter,” will be on display until March 24 at the University Art Gallery on campus.
