Last Wednesday afternoon, a few dozen students at California State University, Stanislaus gathered around Pergola Meadows to shed some pounds, stress and most importantly, clothes for the second-annual charity “Undie Run” hosted by Associated Student, Inc. (ASI) and University Student Union (USU).
The event, now in its second year, raised clothing donations for the needy while promoting health and wellness for the campus community.
“It’s something different,” Jonathan Jimenez (freshman, Criminal Justice) said. “You can be part of something and help out.”
Participants in the event were instructed to run three laps around a designated campus route. At certain points of the lap, stations were set up so that the participants could shed some of their clothing to drop them in donation boxes set up at the respective stations.
Last year, the event helped ASI and USU collect over 500 articles of clothing, all of which were donated to local homeless shelters.
“I have a lot of extra clothes and this was a great way to get rid of them,” Kevin Zapien (freshman, Biology) said.
Samantha Bologna, the USU daily events coordinator and head organizer of the entire event, saw the run as both a means of raising charity and promoting student participation in campus organized events.
“It’s just a way to raise clothing donations, and for students to have fun,” Bologna (senior, English) said.
The origin of this year’s undie run was inspired by the success of other campuses who have hosted similar events.
“I wanted to bring it back this year,” Bologna said. “[ASI and USU] had gotten the idea last year and saw how popular it was and how students reacted to it.”
