California State University, Stanislaus Athletics Department recently adopted a new logo to replace the Warrior head.
The new logo includes an “S” with the word “Warriors” struck through it.
Michael Matoso, CSU Stanislaus Athletics Director, who has facilitated the process of changing the logo since November 2012, explained that the Athletics
Department wanted to develop “a more consistent look throughout the department that would be recognized through the region.”
In addition to creating consistency, Matoso wanted the new design to represent the community.
“We’re the only NCAA university in the county, so our thought was ‘Stanislaus Warriors.’ We represent the entire county.”
CSU Stanislaus Athletics will continue to use the Warrior head. However, it will no longer be the primary logo.
“We have never had specific fonts, colors, or had uniformed word marks like ‘Warriors,’ or ‘Stanislaus,’ or an ‘S’ or ‘W,’ similar to what other schools have,” Matoso said.
“If you look at most PAC-10 school’s logos, it’s not their mascot, it’s word art.”
As to whether this logo will become the permanent logo for the Athletics Department is uncertain. The change of the logo is still in the developing stages.
“A lot of what we’re doing is looking to see what looks good. What do we need to tweak? What do we need to make better?” Matoso said.
Women’s soccer athlete, Brianna Murawski (junior, Business Marketing) expressed overall satisfaction with the new logo.
“I like the logo. I was unsure originally because the warrior head is pretty cool to have on jerseys and stuff,” Murawski said.
“I think the S gives our school a recognizable symbol in the west region.”
At this time, this is not a university-wide logo change. The change is only taking place within the Athletics Department.
In the future, the Athletics Department hopes to have a section at the university bookstore dedicated to athletic apparel, as well as an online merchandise store, so students can purchase the attire that athletes sport.
