This year at the California State University, Stanislaus Jazz Festival, four-time Grammy Award-winning jazz bassist Christian McBride will be performing in a special concert with the CSU Stanislaus Jazz Ensemble. The festival will be held at the Turlock Community Theatre on Saturday, March 7 at 7:30 p.m. McBride will also present a master class at Snider Recital Hall at noon.
Recently featured on the cover of DownBeat magazine, McBride has established his place in the realm of jazz as a prolific artist. His body of work has made him one of the most recorded and most requested jazz musicians today. His love for his passion shows in how he shares jazz with others with a focus on connecting youth to the genre of music.
“His presence is powerful — he is one of the most entertaining musicians out there,” Joe Mazzaferro, director for the Jazz Festival and coordinator of jazz studies at CSU Stanislaus, told University News. “You feel the love that he has for people and for life and he shares that with everyone.”
Mazzaferro went on to say that the reason they decided to perform with Christian McBride was to make the concert accessible to the largest audience possible.
Additionally, the Jazz Festival brings forth opportunities for young musicians and students to participate in workshops and master classes and to receive direct feedback from professional musician’s such as McBride. The festival provides a natural environment that allows students to see beyond what they are learning in the classrooms. It also spreads appreciation for the jazz studies both for future jazz students and educators and for the community.
“I am really excited to see people come together to enjoy this great event,” Mazzaferro said. “It is something that we can all be proud of.”
