Every year representatives from clubs and organizations come together in an array of events to raise money and show off their school pride. This year, for Homecoming 2015: Paint the Town Red, is no different. Between Feb. 2 and Feb. 6, students will experience a recycling war, music video competition, night out at Pizza Factory, obstacle course, Homecoming rally, cart parade, skit and an eventful night of basketball before the big reveal.
The following organizations will have candidates running for Homecoming King and Queen. The candidates running are:
· Kaitlyn Ireland, SAAC
· Edgar Tejeda, Tau Kappa Epsilon
· Luis A. Magana, Theta Chi
· Kevin Zapien, Kappa Sigma
· Kristen Muniz, Upsilon Kappa Delta
· Liz Carrillo, Phi Sigma Sigma
· Meg Holm, Phi Mu
· Bernadette Rodriguez, Alpha Xi Delta
· Iman Calloway, Delta Phi Gamma
· Brittany Valadez, Alpha Pi Sigma
The theme, “Paint the Town Red,” has been used for several years in order to create a sense of tradition for students. Each day of Homecoming week will include at least one event for the candidates and their entourage to participate in. Each event is worth 100 points and there are rules that candidates must follow to earn the maximum points. Perhaps the most rewarding part of Homecoming is the fact that the proceeds from the Recycling War and Night Out at Pizza Factory will go to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
While Homecoming is a chance for organizations to come together, there have been problems in the past.
“The constant issue we have had in the past is that the smaller club and orgs feel that the bigger orgs have always managed to win,” ASI Events Coordinator Giselle Montoya said. “It does discourage them at times, so we have been wanting to change certain events to make it fair and equal for all to have a chance at the title. We want everyone to have fun, but be competitive; at the end of the week it is all about coming together and promoting campus pride.”
