A student armed with a knife stabbed four people inside a University of California, Merced (UC Merced) classroom before being shot and killed by responding officers early Wednesday morning.
According to UCM Alert, UC Merced’s emergency alert system, a total of four people were stabbed; two students, one staff member, one vendor. All expected to recover.
Officials have yet to release the name of the assailant or the motive behind the attack.
In a notification sent out via email by the President of California State University, Stanislaus (Stan State), Joseph F. Sheley wrote, “Our thoughts go out to the victims, their families and the entire UC Merced community. Our University police have offered their assistance if needed in the aftermath of this tragedy, and we stand ready to assist in other ways as well.”
Events such as these can be extremely frightening especially because of how close to home it was, which is why safety precautions are so important.
“The safety of all who work and study at Stanislaus State is of utmost importance. We seek always to remain attentive to danger and to instill a sense of readiness should danger arise.” Wrote Sheley, “Part of that readiness and a more general perspective on violence and responses to it come from conversation with other members of our campus community. We continue to encourage such conversations.”
