Time to brush up on your favorite Urban Dictionary words, because Phi Sigma Sigma will be hosting their first Urban Dictionary-inspired Spelling Bee on Nov. 18. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. in the Event Center.
Phi Sigma Sigma will need contestants to participate in spelling off-the-wall, humorous words found on the slang dictionary site, Urban Dictionary. There is an application for each contestant, but there is not an application fee.
Instead, contestants will be required to sell tickets for the event. Whichever contestant sells the most tickets will receive 20 percent of Phi Sigma Sigma’s profit as a donation to their own philanthropy.
The contestants that decide to participate will be required to spell funny but appropriate Urban Dictionary words that have unheard of definitions and meanings.
The lucky contestant that takes home first place will be awarded with a $100 grand prize.
“It will be hilarious to hear the definitions to the words and watching the contestants try to figure out some of the complicated spellings,” Philanthropy Chairman Gabby Delparte (senior, Health Science) said.
Phi Sigma Sigma is hosting this event in order to raise money for their philanthropy, School and College Readiness, which supports the Kids in Need Foundation.
Pre-sale tickets are $5 and tickets will be $7 at the door. If you bring a brand new school supply item to the door, the ticket will be discounted to the pre-sale price of $5. Pre-sale tickets may be purchased from any contestant or Phi Sigma Sigma member prior to the event.
“The money from the tickets goes to a great cause. This is a way for us to give back and help kids that are struggling or need help in achieving their ultimate educational goals,” Delparte said.
All students are welcome to participate in this fun-filled event. If you would like to apply, contact Phi Sigma Sigma’s Philanthropy Chairman Gabby Delparte at 918-698-0761.
