On Oct. 17, California State University, Stanislaus (Stan State) played host to a group of sixth-grade and seventh-grade students who were interested in the world of science. The theme of the day was “Chemistry Colors Our World.” The students were led by members of the Warriors Chemistry Club, Drs. Elvin Aleman, Shane Phillips, Michael Drake and Ms. Michele Gordon.
Science Saturday is a monthly event hosted by different departments within the College of Science. These events serve as opportunities for local kids to learn not only about science but also about the path towards college. Their mentors for the day, Stan State chemistry students, speak with them about the importance of high school science classes as a foundation for studying science at a college level.
Last month’s event, “Explore the World of Bioethics” was catered towards ninth-grade through twelfth-grade students, and next month’s event has yet to be announced.
During the presentation, the aspiring scientists were put into groups of two or three and led through a fun activity by a Stan State chemistry student. While their professors observed, the Stan State mentors helped their groups measure and crush cochineal insects, mix them with water, and heat the solution on a hot plate. After carefully filtering the solution, the groups mixed it with 10 compounds to create different-colored paints.
The students recorded each new color on a paper wheel that displayed which compound created each color. After they completed putting a sample of each color on the wheel, they were all given a canvas to create a masterpiece with the paints they made themselves.
