Amongst the visually appealing architectural buildings, predictably occupied parking spaces and the savory aromas of restaurants and breweries, Downtown Turlock’s very own Art Space on Main is a host to a fascinating array of art.
On Thursday, Sep 10, artist Darrin Martin presented an astonishing body of work entitled “Echo: Location.”
Immediately upon entering Turlock’s historic downtown building, it was easy to be intrigued by Martin’s aesthetically pleasing displays of art. Contrary to the traditional viewpoints regarding the embodiment of art, Martin’s works challenge your physiological senses through different mediums.  A benefit to Martin’s works is how it is accessible to all audiences, including the blind and visually impaired.
An example of this is an art piece titled “The Divide,” which is a synchronized video installation that is projected onto the location where two walls meet. Not only can you observe the piece, but you can listen to it as well.
Influenced by his own experiences with hearing loss, Martin described the aftermaths of the life-changing event as being a difficult grieving period, as well as an opportunity to explore the altered senses of perception.
“The way we hear sound is a process of translation” Martin said, implying how we individually tend to interpret material.
