SEASIDE – Eli Davis and Garrett Wright both went 5-for-6 in the doubleheader on Sunday that concluded a weekend series sweep for the Warriors from California State University, Stanislaus against the Otters from California State University, Monterey Bay.
“Yeah we had a great weekend as a team overall,” Wright said. “It’s always a great feeling when you can complete a sweep. That was huge for us; we just have to keep playing our baseball and keep getting better every day we come out to the field.”
The first game concluded by a score of 5-3 and the second was 6-3.
“Guys like Ross Gonsalves and Garrett Wright did a fantastic job this weekend of consistently producing qualiy at-bats against quality pitching,” Davis said. “They were the ones doing the dirty work and they took the pressure off me at the plate.”
Phil Quade started for the Warriors in the morning game as he did 5 1/3 innings of work, giving up two earned runs on seven hits but still picked up a no-decision.
In for relief in the sixth was Chris Short who held the lead as he went 3 2/3 innings, allowing only one earned run on five hits as he picked up his first win of the season and is now 1-1.
“I felt really good today, my command and movement was there for all three pitches and I had a great defense behind me,” Short said. “It’s also always easier to pitch knowing that I can lean on my hitters to score runs, they have been doing a fantastic job.”
In the second game, the Warriors took the quick 4-0 lead by the middle of the second, with Justin Manci driving in the first two runs in the first inning after a single to center field.
“This was a huge weekend for us to make a move and we did,” Manci said. “Our pitchers worked their tails off and our offense was outstanding. We played all aspects of the game pretty well; we have to keep getting better and get ready for SD.”
The true freshman, Dustin Baisdon started for the Warriors as he picked up his first win of the year as he threw four innings giving up two earned runs on five hits, three walks and a strikeout.
The Warriors are now tied for third place in conference with UC San Diego standing at 12-8 in CCAA. Overall Warriors are 15-11 and will face off vs. the Tritons this upcoming weekend with the series beginning Friday at 3 p.m. in Turlock. Then, action will resume Saturday with a doubleheader and the conclusion of the weekend series on Sunday at 11 a.m.
“Right now we are just locked in and staying focused on worrying about ourselves and playing our game,” Wright said. “If we keep doing that winning will take care of itself.”
