The music was bumping, food was grilling, and cans and bottles were everywhere. What sounds like a raging Saturday night party was just the scene of California State University, Stanislaus’ quad this past week for “Recycle Wars.”
From March 5 through March 9, Warriors gathered in the quad to participate in a recycling competition hosted by the University Student Union Eco-Warriors. The winner of the competition, the organization that collects the most money, will be able to take a percentage of its earnings as a donation to a charity of its choice.
The participating groups included Alpha Xi Delta, Alpha Pi Sigma, Kappa Sigma, Phi Lambda Rho, Sigma Omega Phi, Theta Chi, Upsilon Kappa Delta, Tau Kappa Epsilon, Nu Alpha Kappa, Phi Sigma Sigma and the Love Evolution club.
Wanting to encourage an eco-friendly environment on campus, the Student Union created a unique way to get students and faculty involved for a greater cause.
“It’s a fun and easy way to promote sustainability on campus,” Carolyn Zoerb (senior, English and Communication Studies), a member of Phi Sigma Sigma, said. “It’s an easy way to get people involved.”
However, the sustainability movement on campus didn’t end after March 9. Each participating group was given a recycling bin to decorate showcasing their organization and Warrior pride with a “going green” twist. These bins will be placed at each organization’s table in the quad year round to promote students and faculty to recycle.
This event not only encouraged a healthier environment, but it also provided the opportunity to give back to the community through a charity. If they win, the members of Kappa Sigma will be donating a portion of the earnings to The Fisher House Foundation, a program that helps support members of the military and their families.
“It keeps it clean,” Jerelle Wilson (freshman, English), a member of Kappa Sigma, said. “It inspires us to go out and get involved. Who says community service can’t be fun?”
To see which club or organization won Recycle Wars, stop by the quad on Wednesday, March 14 when the winner will be announced.
