February gets the short end of the stick when it comes to the 12 months of the year. It has the least amount of days and is an odd month that adds a day every four years. It is in the middle of winter and signifies the beginning of a new semester of college with loads of homework and tests to face each week. With all this negativity surrounding February, there is a positive aspect that deserves to be recognized and applauded.
While there are only 28 days, sometimes 29, like this year, February packs a punch when it comes to sports. Every major sport features something outstanding during this month, from new beginnings to mid-season events to celebrated endings. Regardless of your favorite sport, February will satisfy your craving for athletics.
The beginning of February is all about football. Even though college football games ended in January, February marks the beginning of the upcoming season, with national signing day scheduled for February 1st. The fight for the top recruits and the rush of finding players that will help the team for the next three to four years gives college football fans something to celebrate between the championship game in January and the spring games in April. A few days after signing day, the professionals play in the Super Bowl, which was moved to February a few years ago.
Throughout the month of February, basketball and hockey fans get to enjoy games on a nightly basis as well as all-star games in both sports. The all-star games aren’t extremely competitive but they allow fans to watch all their favorite players team up instead of waiting around for the Olympics every four years.
March is when the madness begins in college basketball but February is not a pushover. February is full of rivalry, bracket buster, and league games every night. The teams that hope to make an appearance at the tournament in March have to win crucial games in February, making this month extremely important for college basketball.
Soccer is also showcased in February as the Barclays Premier League has critical matches throughout the month. Teams use this month to make a major push towards the championship in May.
Last but certainly not least in February is baseball. February features pitchers and catchers reporting to spring training followed by position players a week later. Fans of baseball love this time of year because it ends a four month absence of baseball and brings optimism as every team prepares for a long season that will hopefully end with a World Series championship.
February may be short on days, but big on sporting events. Every minute of the days in February are filled with sports greatness.
