California State University, Stanislaus (CSU Stanislaus) now has a Student Veterans Center in the Student Services building on campus. The purpose of the Student Veterans Center is to give all of the veterans at CSU Stanislaus a place of their own.
“The population of veterans on campus is growing and we wanted to give them a quiet place to go study or to just hang out,” Veteran Affairs Coordinator Nadine Kent said. There are over 350 student veterans enrolled at CSU Stanislaus and the school felt it was about time those students were recognized and given a place especially for them.
“It is nice to be appreciated,” veteran John Ramos (senior, Communication Studies) said. “A lot of the time we get forgotten and it is great that CSU Stanislaus is showing their appreciation for what we have done.”
CSU Stanislaus is aware that some veterans have exhausted their educational benefits. The Student Veterans Center is a way to still give those students something of their own as well.
The Student Veterans Center has a refrigerator and microwave to make eating lunch on campus easier. For entertainment, there is a television with a gaming system along with a telephone, computer and board games.
There will also be planned events on and off campus, such as a movie night and a board game night. Although the center is for veterans, they can also bring in non-veterans to either hang out or get some studying done.
There are more benefits for the veterans beside a place to hangout or study. After a veterans first semester at CSU Stanislaus, a veteran will get priority registration, like seniors, along with one-on-one advising. This will help those who are eligible to get the classes they need with less stress and to help the veteran students graduate on time.
The Student Veterans Center is located in room 115 in the Student Services building. To contact Nadine Kent with any questions regarding the center, call (209) 667-3081, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
