Move over Jabbawockeez, there’s a new dance crew taking over the Central Valley. Fusing Indian, hip hop, classical, and jazz dance styles, ‘Tashan’ is quickly making a name for itself as the premier Bollywood dance group of the Valley.
Standing apart from all other dance teams, Tashun gives a fresh breath of culture to the Stanislaus County area. Ryan Maharaj, California State University, Stanislaus alumni and founder of Tashan, is hoping to bring awareness of Bollywood culture to local residents.
“My goal for the team is to find new ways of bringing the Bollywood culture to the Central Valley,” Maharaj said. “There’s not much of the Indian culture present.”
While many dance groups imitate the styles of “America’s Best Dance Crew” or “So You Think You Can Dance,” Tashan brings an original collaborative style to its viewers. Bringing a modern twist to the Indian inspired dance. The result is a high-energy, captivating performance not limited by any stereotypes.
For the past two years Maharaj, the sole founder of Tashan, has shaped this group into a bona fide award winning dance crew. Recently, Tashan took home the coveted highest title in the Dance category at the Valley’s Got Talent competition held at the Gallo Arts Center in Modesto.
Although Tashan performances are professionally in sync and one of a kind, Maharaj welcomes dancers of all background and experience level. New members are always welcome.
The team is currently comprised of young adults between the ages of 18 through 23. The current members are Amy Ransom, Keaton Crowder, Yesica Hernandez, Megan Lee, Ryan Maharaj, Emily Latronica, Emily York, Ricardo Ramos and Eden Trevino. The majority of these members are students at CSU Stanislaus.
Tashan is not limited to just a competitive dance team. They’ve also performed recreationally at CSU Stanislaus events like the multi-cultural night. Some of Tashan’s performances include private events and birthday parties as well.
Maharaj anticipates endless possibilities for his team.
“We always keep our eyes out for new opportunities,” Maharaj said.
