Jasmyne Casey is out of jail after posting bail this morning. Casey is currently being charged with a felony under California Penal Code 245a1, assault with a deadly weapon. This charge comes after Casey allegedly was found attacking her two roommates with a kitchen knife and scissors.
As far as Casey returning to campus, that is all up to Judicial Affairs and Title V Student Code of Conduct. They will determine if they will open up an investigation or not.
The victims involved in the attack were also released from the hospital this evening.
Andy Roy, Chief of Police at University Police Department (UPD), spoke to The Signal to give an update on the situation that transpired in the Residence Village on May 2, 2017 involving Casey.
A resident of the dorms reported that there was an altercation taking place in a dorm room at 11:18 p.m.. Roy said that when the Resident Assistants (RAs) arrived at the scene, they allegedly were faced with Casey slashing her two roommates with a pair of scissors and a kitchen knife.
The RAs jumped in and contained Casey along with the help of the two roommates until another resident alerted UPD. UPD and Turlock Police Department officers took her into custody, Roy said.
The police department and RAs used minimal force when containing her.All of the victims were taken to a hospital separate from Casey to treat their injuries, Roy said.
UPD then released a video on a television channel called Starrez to update the residents on what had taken place before they heard it from an outside news source. According to Roy, this event was the first time that an instance this severe and alarming had transpired in the living facilities on campus.
“You’re talking to someone who has been here 15 years and I haven’t seen something like that and it’s sad,” Roy said.
He added that the attack was an anomaly and that to his knowledge all of the roommates appeared to be friends.
Chelsie Muro (freshman,Pre-Nursing), campus resident, was not on campus grounds when the attack took place. She walked into the dorm areas confused about the whole situation.
“I was like oh my gosh, what happened,” Muro said. “I was kind of freaked out, like did someone party too hard?”
Although she was scared when she found out that people had been hurt she still feels safe knowing that everything was under control.
“My roommates and I are really close. I feel that the smaller school we have builds a community aspect so I really like how safe I feel,” Muro said. “I’m grateful that the authorities handled it the way they did.”
There may be some questions as to why the UPD did not release an emergency notification as soon as the attack took place. Roy emphasized that those messages are only sent out to the students when the danger is still ongoing and posing a threat to others. This is why the e-mail the next morning was deemed more appropriate in this specific situation.
“I feel very confident and I feel that this is an isolated event. There is no threat to our campus community,” Roy stated, adding, “I’m not stressed or concerned that Casey even out on bond, would come back and harm our campus community.”
An emphasis was expressed when it came time to listing all of the possible resources that are available on campus for those affected by the situation. Mainly stating that the Police Department is always there for anyone who has concerns or questions.
All while not forgetting to mention that whenever you are in an emergency situation your first response should always be to call 9-1-1.
Chief Roy ended the interview by praising the acts of the RAs who stepped in and took control of the situation.
“It is truly a heroic effort on their part and they went way above the call of duty for what they should have done. I’m blessed that they were there.”
