On Thursday, Feb. 23, California State University, Stanislaus, (Stan State), will be holding a Black History Month event in the Snider Recital Hall from 6:30 to 9 p.m.
The event will be featuring Kinara Sankofa, a Bay Area spoken word artist, and the keynote speaker will be Tia Oso, coordinator of the Black Immigration Network and the Arizona organizer for the Black Alliance for Just Immigration.
The event will begin with the Black National Anthem and an African dance performance by Souls of the Rising Sun.
Tia Oso will also meet with interested students on Thursday from 2:30 to 3:45 p.m. in South Dining Hall to answer any questions.
The Black History Month event will be live-streamed as well.
“People have worked really hard to distill from their experience some understanding that they can share with us that we can take away and build on in our lives,” Dr. James Tuedio, Dean of the College of the Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences said.
“You’ve got to know your history, other people’s history, especially in 2017 with our current political climate. You don’t want to lose it, and so you’ve got to tell the story. We’re telling it through song, we’re telling it through dance, we’re telling it through narration,” Dr. Kilolo Brodie, Chair of the Department of Social Work and Chair of the President’s Commission on Diversity and Inclusion said.
