The Stan State Warriors welcomed the Cal State LA Golden Eagles into Fitzpatrick Arena for their second to last game of the season.
The Warriors jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead with a few good steals and perfect shots to set the game tempo to a high.
The Warriors’ defense would hold up throughout the first half with key steals leading to more points for the team. The lead they took early in the game would hold up into halftime as the Warriors went into the locker room with a 36 – 31 lead.
The Warriors would increase their lead with a 12-2 run in the second half, turning up the tempo of the game and leaving the Golden Eagles down.
The Golden Eagles would find their stride through 28 turnovers. The Warriors dropped passes would turn into second chance points for the Eagles, pushing them into a 51-51 tie with Warriors with nine minutes remaining.
The turnovers would continue for the Stan State Warriors that night as they dropped a close one to the Golden Eagles, 67 – 65.
After the game, Coach Paul Trevor said that time played an important factor in coaching his team back into the game last night.
“I would put the plays onto the whiteboard and they wouldn’t translate onto the court, I felt like I didn’t have enough timeouts to get my team back into the game,” said Trevor
In reference to his team’s performance in the second half, Trevor added that the Eagles “came out faster in the second half” and the Warriors ”couldn’t keep up.”
With tonight’s loss and Humboldt State’s win, there are no seeds left in the CCAA tournament. The Warriors will close out their season at home on Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. against Cal State Dominguez Hills for Senior Night.
