Stan State’s radio station KCSS hosted their annual Bandstand show at the Grizzly Rock Café on Saturday evening. They are celebrating their 45-year anniversary this year.
KCSS music director Querenhepuc Casillas, (senior, Communication Studies) said that this event meant a lot to her, “45 years and still kicking!”
She said that these shows are a testament to how much the station has grown over these 45 years.
The show was free and open to everyone. This show gives local musicians the chance to perform their music in front of a local crowd.
The first act was Willpower, an alternative band from Modesto. This was only their second show performing together. The band was added after another act cancelled.
The singer and guitarist wowed the crowd with his guitar skills on stage. KCSS station manager Elias Futch (senior, Communication Studies) said “he had the sickest [guitar] solo I’ve ever seen in person.”
Next was another alternative band, Worncapkid, from Manteca.
John Mendoza Jr., singer and guitarist from Worncapkid, said that the band formed in 2017 by making music in his bedroom. He reached out to friends to form a group and they have been performing together for about a year.
Mendoza Jr. said “I think it’s great that bands are coming together. I’m really happy that Stan State is putting together these things so local bands can play together.”
The Bedheads performed their last show together before they move to Washington. The band will be known as The Odd Eights now.
Killah Wail, a pop surf punk band from Modesto, was the second to last band to perform that night. They announced that this was one of their shows of the semester performing together.
The final act was What Eats Hydra, a pop-punk band from Modesto. Their music got the crowd excited. The crowd enjoyed their performance so much that they returned to the stage to play an encore.
KCSS continues to showcase musicians in the area by hosting these shows.
Futch said that the Central Valley is “deprived” of opportunities like this for local musicians, so he loves seeing them get their chance at these shows.
Casillas agreed with Futch and said, “give local bands a chance.”
The Bandstand show happens every year, but there are other shows the station hosts throughout the year. Keep up to date with KCSS for their next show.
