Managing your money can get really stressful especially when it comes to planning for your future. The CSU Stanislaus Financial Aid & Scholarships Department held a Manage Your Debt Workshop last month.
The University invited Maricela Abdishou, the Branch Manager from Wells Fargo in Modesto to provide tips for students on how to manage student debt and real-world budgets.
Financial Aid Advisor and Coordinator Landy Gonzalez-Hernandez explained the importance of holding this workshop for Stan State Students.
“We try to make this as helpful as we can because this is something that is needed. Some students are about to graduate and are about to face the real world budget. Some of them are already in that and end up not knowing how to pay their student debt.”
The Washington Monthly most recently ranked the University the No.1 “Bang for the Buck” in the West Region.
“We are really proud to hold that title,” Gonzalez-Hernandez said.
Jessica Valero, (Senior, Psychology) attended the workshop and was able to learn about tips on how to manage her money.
Valero said, “I am currently in $20,000 in debt with subsidized and unsubsidized loans plus credit cards.” She went on to say, “I like the whole what you need and don’t need tip because I am an impulse buyer andI’mm always telling myself that I need that and need this while I’m looking at cloth on Hollister.”
Valero was very passionate about advocating that students need to learn where their money is going by looking and paying attention to their statements and see where they are spending it.
The U.S. Department of Education’s College Scorecard has provided students and families with clear information about California State University-Stanislaus. Stan state is currently 64% above the national student debt.
Abdishou said, “You need to know what your financial future is now so you can look at the best decisions. Everyone has a different reality but starting now you can determine your best course of action.”
