After a successful Fall 2018 semester, the Signal is signing off for winter break.
Some of our favorite news stories from this semester include coverage of a Stan State alumnus’ experience being scammed off the HireStanState page, our most comprehensive midterm Student Voter Guide yet, a journey to Nevada for the Organization for the Study of Communication, Language and Gender (OSCLG) Conference, and coverage of the emergency campus closure in November.
“Being at the Signal this semester really allowed me to explore a new medium of expression,” said Haley Steele, who was a reporter for the first time this semester and focused primarily on sports coverage. “I was challenged to find new stories within my beat that would keep readers interested and invested. Not only did my writing flourish, but so did my friendships. The people are great…I can’t wait to be back at it next semester!”
According to the editorial team here at the Signal, we’ve had one hell of a semester. Andrew Cabrera said, “I think this semester ran smooth and we grew a lot as both a team and as a news outlet.” He was the creative mind behind the How it’s Made video that was released at the beginning of November. “It was really fun to film and I was super stoked with how it came out. I hope to make more videos like this and add content to our thriving life here on campus.” If you haven’t seen the video, check it out here! Another editor, Emily Hake (junior, communication) said, “My favorite part of this semester was furthering my investigative skills and work with a new batch of talented reporters.” This is Hakes second semester with the Signal and hopefully, she won’t leave us any time soon.
The Signal enjoyed a particularly impressive semester of contributing writer submissions this semester from students enrolled in Dr. Daniel Horvath’s Writing for the Media course, including a heartfelt piece by Gary Novak about the transition to college after life in prison, and excellent reporting from Allan Perez on transgender students’ reactions to the federal administration’s attempt to narrow the definition of gender. Both stories can be found in the Signal’s December print edition.
The Signal wishes Stan State a restful and happy winter break. We’ll see you next semester!
