The California State University, Stanislaus (Stan State), Department of Theatre presents “The Fantasticks” by Harvey Schmidt, with lyrics by Tom Jones and directed by Stan State’s Kitsy Olson. The play runs March 3-5 and March 10-12 at 8 p.m., and March 6 and 13 at 2 p.m. in the Studio Theater, D40.
“The Fantasticks” is a spectacular off-Broadway production in which a young man and a girl next door are kept apart due to their parents building a wall between them. This production is the world’s longest-running musical and has amused generations of viewers all over the world for 50 years. Now, it’s Stan State’s turn to be amused.
This production is a result of four weeks of hard work and dedication. The talented cast of Stan State will bring life to about 20 characters in this humorous, romantic production. Between the amazing acting and scenic musical numbers, this production is a must-see in our community.
Stan State’s Black Box Theatre is the perfect intimate atmosphere for this production, according to the play’s Music Director and pianist, Patrice Stribling Nelson. She shared that when the play first opened off-Broadway, it seated about 35 people in the audience.
Even though “The Fantasticks” was controversial back in 1960 due to the frequent use of the word rape, Nelson explains that Stan State’s production is a bit more appropriate.
“Rape is not a subject that should be treated lightly,” Nelson said. “I think one of the things that Kitsy [Olson] has done beautifully here is make light of the scene with out making light of the subject.”
“The Fantasticks” gives our local actors and actresses the opportunity to show their unique and wonderful talents here at Stan State.
Nelson shares that the cast is full of talented students as well as wonderful voices.
“What I find more striking with the students here is their freedom to explore,” Nelson said. “They are willing to try anything and everything to explore their characters and expand on their roles.”
General Admission is $10. For students, faculty, staff, seniors, and military the cost is $8. Free parking will be available in Lot 2. Tickets can be purchased in person, online or over the phone at 209-667-3166.
