On Apr. 14, the Associated Student Inc. (ASI) of California State University, Stanislaus (Stan State) hosted their Drag Show from 6 to 8 p.m.
With the Event Center decorated to make the inside resemble a casino, the stage was being decorated and put together for the performers to dance all that evening.
Once it was time to get the audience in the building and seated, ASI members were handing out rainbow flags, raffle tickets and delicious, thirst-quenching mock-tails.
The Drag Show consisted of two professional drag queens, Jamela and Deja Vanity as well as one of our own warriors Stephanie Landeros (junior, Sociology). Each drag performer performed about three songs each all while twirling, jumping and doing the splits on the stage.
Audience member Sarah Ayers (sophomore, Criminal Justice), expressed her thoughts while enjoying the performances at the drag show.
“The performers are passionate and confident in each of their performances,” Ayers said. “It is entertaining to watch them dance and to see how much talent each of them have.”
Ayers also stressed the importance of hosting drag shows on campus.
“I think hosting a drag show on campus is important because it allows students to form perspectives and gain a better understanding of the different communities we have in this world.”
ASI offered a $50 gift card to Stan State students who were willing to enter the drag show competition; however, since Landeros was the only student participating she won by default. Landeros expressed a brief speech after being announced as the student winner of the drag show.
“I’d like to thank Caitlin for putting on the show. I’d like to thank my family and friends. Thank you,” Landeros said while she acknowledged the audience.
Landeros is a Drag King who goes by Vincent Parker whose drag character mimics Bruno Mars. During the drag show, Vincent Parker performed to Bruno Mars’ songs “Treasure” and “Runaway Baby”
Drag performer Landeros was introduced to drag due to one of her friend’s obsessions with RuPaul. Since then, Landeros found it intriguing dressing up as a male and has been performing in drag for about two years. She also started off by volunteering to do drag at Love Evolution’s annual Rainbow Prom. She also tells us about her top three drag performers who inspire her.
“My top three are Lady Gaga (Aka Joe Calderone), David Bowie and Prince. They all have an aspect of androgyny that they harness and enjoy. I love it,” Landeros said.
The winner of the student drag show happily talked about her feelings while she was on stage performing.
“Vincent enjoyed it. He almost slipped, but he remembered watching Jesus (aka Beyoncé) perform at halftime during the Super Bowl and played it off like she did. It was fun. I love to act a fool in front of people, mostly because it makes for a good story and laugh. I have performed on campus 4 times, counting this past time, and they have all been amazing and have had great feedback from the audience. Although, I hope to add new stuff to my routine because I feel like I have done the same things over and over,” Landeros said.
After the drag show was over, Deja Vanity took the time to clarify that a person who enjoys doing drag is not necessarily a transgender individual.
“Just because you do drag, does not mean that you are transgender,” Vanity said. “I think anyone who doesn’t know much about drag would assume that.”
The drag show was intended to bring visibility to the drag community and to let others know that drag not only is a hobby, but also a career if one is passionate about it.
