After months of intense anticipation in the United States (U.S.) regarding the General Election, we now know that Donald Trump has taken the presidency after a win in Wisconsin this Tuesday night.
Most credible newspapers in the U.S. forecast a landslide Clinton win due to her popularity with minority groups and past political experience. They were correct to some degree as she did win the popular vote.
This has definitely taken many Americans by surprise as they believed Hillary Clinton was the clear win.
“It’s a surprise. Well, he is an unknown. He has no political experience. I don’t think he would be very effective and he has no filter,” Turlock resident Michael Lopez said.
Many citizens in Turlock like Isidore Camarillo are in disbelief and are unhappy with this outcome.
“ Surreal, bizarre, and out of this world. Someone who insults people has gotten this far,” Camarillo said.
The views expressed to The Signal speak to the fear and anxiety about how the next four years will play out.
“My kids are very terrified of this election. They ask me if he is going to send me back” Maggie Ray, a retired teacher and California State University, Stanislaus (Stan State) alumni said.
President-elect Trump will have a great deal of work to do to instill confidence and foster unity due to the way he treated many minority groups, including women, Latinos, and African-Americans.
Trump had many unpopular opinions when it came to these minority groups that ranged from hateful to ignorant messages, however in his victory speech, he addresses the need for unification, saying that “For those who have chosen not to support me in the past, of which there were a few people, I’m reaching out to you for your guidance and your help so that we can work together and unify our great country.”
Hillary Clinton, in her concession speech, added “I hope that he will be a successful president for all Americans. This is not the outcome we wanted or we worked so hard for, and I’m sorry we did not win this election for the values we share and the vision we hold for our country.”
“I count my blessings every single day that I am an American, and I still believe, as deeply as I ever have, that if we stand together and work together with respect for our differences, strengthen our convictions, and love for this nation, our best days are still ahead of us,” Clinton said.
Results also showed that Republicans have taken majority of the Senate and will continue to hold the House of Representatives. Jeff Denham was re-elected into the House of Representatives, CA 10th District.
Kamala Harris was also elected Tuesday night as the first African American woman in the Senate since 1999.
