Rain is very much needed in California due to the drought, but students at California State University, Stanislaus (Stan State), found the rain as an inconvenience, while others appreciated it.
“I love the rain. I never use an umbrella or worry much about the rain, if anything I just wear a hoodie,” Brittany VanCaster(junior, Chemistry) said.
“I like this weather. I’m from San Diego so we don’t get much rain since it is always sunny,” Ruth Alcaide (junior, Anthropology) said.
However, VanCaster expressed her frustration when asked about the flooding parking lots around campus.
“It’s very frustrating. It’s already so difficult trying to find parking spaces when it’s not flooding, that when you start closing parking lots, it’s even worse to find a parking spot,” VanCaster stressed.
Not only has this rain created floods around some parking lots around campus, but it has also created big bodies of water near crosswalks and building entrances. This makes it more difficult for students to even walk through campus and into their classroom buildings.
Aside from the rain flooding important areas that students often frequent throughout the day, Stan State students witnessed a tree near the dorms fall down due to the wet and weak ground, according to Alcaide.
As of now, Facility Services has been working to pump the water out of the parking lots that were affected by the rain. Also, according to University officials, roads Geer and Calaveras are planned to remain closed until the end of the working day.
If you need assistance getting around campus, you can contact the University’s shuttle at (209) 277-8940, and if you need to report any other floods around you, call the University Police Department (UPD) at (209) 667-3114.
