Humble Beginnings isn’t just the name of Robert Ramirez’s brand new barber shop; it’s his way of life. The 24 year-old has moved his backyard business into a furnished shop that can make his faithful clients more comfortable in his hands.
Humble Beginnings is a barbershop that is located right across the street from California State University, Stanislaus (Stan State). Their prices range from $20 to $35 depending on what brings you in.
Ramirez says it all started when he found a pair of his father’s own hair clippers during his freshmen year. He then began to cut hair in his backyard to gain some experience through a hobby.
“I would have friends come over to my home so I can cut their hair as a hobby on the side,” said Ramirez.
The more hair he cut hair, the more people who began to show up in his backyard. Due to the overwhelming amount of people beginning to fill up his limited time, the barber decided to start charging his friends to make a little income. The side job soon turned into his career in the blink of an eye.
Ramirez didn’t know how good he was at what he did until he saw his clients become very faithful to him and his craft.
“In order to make some money, I started charging two dollars per haircut but as soon as more people kept coming I had to charge even more,” said Ramirez.
Throughout his journey he has cut hair for almost 9 years now. When it came to finding a name of his newfound business, it only made sense for Ramirez to look back on his journey that got him where he is now.
“Looking back on where I came from through Livingston, the name Humble Beginnings just made the most sense,” said Ramirez.
Walking in there are things that instantly catch your attention. First being the oldies music being blared from the television, walking into a modern day barbershop.
The shop filled with people sitting getting to wait for their haircut. Then, as the customer sits into the chair, what makes the experiences even more enjoyable is the banter amongst the barbers. What helps that atmosphere is how Ramirez doesn’t make himself stand out as a boss, but rather fit in as an equal.
“He doesn’t disrespect any one of us,” said Manny Regalado, friend and fellow barber. “He is always willing to give out a helping hand where he can.”
The environment they want to provide to their clientele is quite simple. They are highly trained professionals, where they always have a constant flow of customers coming in, but with seven barbers on staff, you are in and out within the hour.
The nerves of coming into a brand new barbershop comes and goes due to their friendly demeanors as well as their skills behind the clippers. It is almost like watching painters approaching their easel’s as every customer sits in their chair throughout the day.
“We want you to walk in and have a cool experience wanting to build a relationship with our customers. We can be accommodative for everything you need to be done when you walk into our barbershop,” said Regalado.
What the future holds for Humble Beginnings? Only time will tell. Ramirez and his team only hope to continue to run shop, continuing to remain open to their loyal customers, continuing to pursue their passion cutting hair while in the midst of just having fun.
“We want to still be here, grindin hard and paying the bills,” said Ramirez.
