The University Student Center and Code Red Entertainment worked together with Student Leadership, Engagement, and Belonging to put on an event at the Warrior Steps in honor of Hispanic/Latinx Heritage Month and Mexican Independence Day.
At the Viva La Independencia event, Stan State Mariachi performed alongside Mariachi Estelar who has performed for many different events from weddings to a 49ers halftime show.
The passion and pride of the musicians could be felt in each vibration dancing through the atmosphere. The sound and energy of Latinx ancestry would resonate in your bones when the musicians sang in unison. Their traditional performance was as bold as the colors on the flags adorning the backdrop alongside Stan State’s shield.
According to institutional data from the Office of Analytics and Institutional Effectiveness, more than half of Stan State’s students are Hispanic/Latino(a).
Jocelyn Castellanos, the ASI Programs Manager, shared her “hope that this collaboration inspires students, student organizations, and even other campus entities to also coordinate events like this to highlight diverse beautiful cultures, their music, and traditions.”
Roxana Moreno (Senior, Liberal Studies) tabled with Phi Lambda Rho at the event. She gave insight to her perspective of the event.
“It’s nice getting in touch with your roots and for people not accustomed to the culture to connect with it through the music,” she said.
She also mentioned, with warmth, the fact that the music has the capacity to bring people home.
At the top of the Warrior Steps were two other booths: the Male Success Initiative and Undocumented Student Service. Each booth had an abundance of information on their tables about the services, support, and community they offer, as well as fun little things like coloring pages and sticky hands.
Undocumented Student Services had a folder of information for anyone that came by. In the folder, was also a flyer for a Bowling Bash Night for September 26th at 5:00p.m.

Knowing that the college has a performance for us, shows how much they care about our traditions. Really does make my couture feel loved and seen for what we do.
