“This Woman’s Work” was event hosted by Ronald Rodriguez, the dean of Library Services, and Mary Weppler-Van Diver, the Special Collections & University Archives Librarian where they introduced historical documents and artifacts cultivated by Special Collections at Stanislaus State University that showcased important and often overlooked women who were pivotal in the development of the Central Valley to commemorate and pay respects to their contributions.
This reception took place on the third floor of the Vasché Library and was held on September 18th, 2024.
“Focused on the 20th century, this multimedia exhibition celebrates the work, life, and legacy across a dynamic range of agricultural, domestic, professional, and educational fields,” Diver said prior to highlighting the women important to the history of CSU Stanislaus.
One notable figure discussed is Dr. Marvalene Hughes, who was not only the first female president of the university, but the first black president as well.
Their featured guest was Barbara Gill Salerno, a descendant of the Arnold Family and primary donor of the Arnold Family collection featured at the exhibition, who discussed the trials and tribulations that her female ancestors and other women of their time went through in Fruitland, California, in order to build and strengthen their community.
