Many CSU Stanislaus students are frequent visitors of the Recreational Center on campus, but intramural sports have leagues and tournaments with spots waiting to be filled, as there are a plethora of sports to choose from. There are even video game tournaments with popular games being played like NBA 2K and FIFA.
Kryslin James (junior, Psychology) works at the Rec Center and participates in many sports. She always looks forward to watching volleyball and basketball, and she’s very excited to play with her coworkers in 4 v 4 flag football, which was added this semester. She hopes for more involvement this year in sports that aren’t so popular like badminton and archery tag.
“There are a lot of students here who visit the Rec and only a small portion actually know about intramural sports and join,” James says.
Another student, Jose Cano (junior, Criminal Justice) also believes there could be more exposure to the intramurals that are offered at the Rec Center. He believes that getting it posted more around campus and on social media will influence more people to show up and play.
Cano is no stranger to the Rec Center. He goes about 5 times a week and loves how reliable it is for Stan State students. As a big volleyball fan, he has competed in the volleyball tournament for the past couple years. Last semester, he took home the championship ring with his 3 teammates. He says the competitiveness of the teams is his favorite aspect.
“It makes it fun for everyone when people bring their best competition when they show up,” says Cano.
Whitney Borrego (junior, Criminal Justice) and Helen Ngo (junior, Nursing) both plan on joining a volleyball tournament. This sport is offered indoors and on grass. They are also hoping to try out sports they haven’t played before.
Ngo is eager to try futsal and badminton, but her biggest goal is to meet new people and make new friends.
Borrego is persistent in trying out soccer. She was introduced to the Rec Center during orientation and is thankful that she can come for free at her leisure. She thinks it’s a fun, inclusive environment and that more students need to check it out.
