Plants not only brighten up any space but also make thoughtful and budget-friendly gifts. Students looking to add some greenery to their lives had the chance to do so at the CSU Stanislaus Biology Student Association (BSA) plant sale on Feb. 12 in the Naraghi Hall of Science.
Stan State students had the opportunity to check out some plants and purchase their own. The campus event showcased a variety of plants, ranging from vibrant tropical plants miniature succulents, all grown within the Stan State Greenhouse.
BSA President Elias Figueiredo (Senior, Biology) said the plant sale helps support the Biology Student Association, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the campus greenhouse. The funds will go toward future events and other club activities.
Figueiredo said the event plays an important role in bringing the campus community together. “Hopefully, it allows people to connect and share a love for plants,” he said. “It’s also a great opportunity to raise awareness about our biology club and help people learn more about plants, especially the ones they keep at home.”
BSA Treasurer Allison Shewfelt (Junior, Biology) explained the benefits of the plant sale.
“We organized this plant sale to not only help out the greenhouse, but also help out the club,” Shewfelt said. “It is also another way to include an event not only for our officers to promote the club, but also for other students who want to join the club.”
“Our advisor is actually the greenhouse organizer,” Shewfelt said. “He takes care of everything in there, and we have a 60-40 deal with him. So, the greenhouse takes 40% of our sale, and then we take 60% as a club.”
Shewfelt also explained how the plant sale benefits the club, the greenhouse, and Stan State students.
“I think this helps promote the club, but I know a lot of people who care for plants because they have plants of their own,” she said. “I think that’s very helpful for them. It also benefits the greenhouse because we have so many plants, and they need to get rid of some.”
Teisy Zavala-Cortez (Senior, Creative Media) attended the plant sale to admire the wide selection of plants.
“I think this is a great opportunity for students who are interested in plants, especially because they are also grown in the campus greenhouse.” Zavala-Cortez said. “I saw that they had a lot of succulents, which is nice, because I feel like they would grow well here in this kind of environment.”
Zavala-Cortez also shared how events like this enrich the student experience on campus.
“I think events like this bring people together over a shared interest in nature and sustainability,” Zavala-Cortez said. “It’s a great way to engage students in a hands-on way because it encourages awareness about plant life. Plus, it is an easy way for students to learn more about plant care.”
“I recommend this to people who are interested in plants and for students who wish to learn more about biology, or even if you are interested in buying your first plant,” Zavala-Cortez stated. “I think supporting student events like this can make you feel like you’re contributing to the campus. I think there is always something nice about that.”
