To kick off the spring semester, Stanislaus State students traveled to K1 Speed in Sacramento with the Weekend Warrior Program, a program that invites Stan State students to attend events that are off-campus at a reduced price.
For the first event of the semester, students went to K1 Speed, an indoor high speed go-kart track where drivers can compete against one another.
On the bus ride to Sacramento, students had the opportunity to watch the movie “The Fast and the Furious,” which fit the event’s theme.
Once students arrived at the facility, they were able to see the track and two previous racing cars on display while heading to the check-in.
After checking in, students went through a debrief so they could understand the different flags that would appear when driving and know how to race safely. Students were able to drive twelve laps in total and compete in three races around the track.
When asked what she thought of the event, Yaritza Mara (Graduate Student, Social Work) responded positively, praising the organizers.
“I really liked it,” she said. “I think it was really well organized. They were letting us know exactly what was next, at what time, so it was really nice.”
Branden Garza (Sophomore, Business), who got second place in one of his races, talked about what motivated him to come to the event.
“I saw the racing one and as I’m an avid racing fan, [I thought], ‘Why not just go?’ And I got the tickets and I was happy. I was like, well, maybe I’ll meet some new people,” he said.
Adrian Gallegos-Ambris (Freshman, Computer Science) discussed how he plans on also going to the upcoming Warrior Weekend trip to Dodge Ridge, a skiing and snowboarding resort, on March 21st.
“I’ve been going to Dodge Ridge over and over again, and now that I see it’s stuff that I like to do, it suits me. I’m coming because it’s cool,” he said.
