Healthy Warriors! Happy Warriors!

Stan State’s Health Center goes beyond by offering a range of resources for students, from medical care to basic health safety. The Health Center highlighted its health fair on Sept. 24 which featured a variety of activities.

Free flu shots and blood pressure tests were offered, along with a variety of other activities such as health screenings, basic first aid demonstrations, yoga and jiu jitsu. Several booths also featured additional activities and giveaways provided by CalFire, Basic Needs and other community partners.

Sergio Mazon, a physician at the student Health Center, discussed the many different resources the center provides. He mentioned that they work very closely with Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) to help care for Stan State students.

When referring to the health fair, Mazon said that all students were encouraged to show up. He also emphasizes that they provide free flu shots and underscores the importance of getting vaccinated as flu season approaches.

The Health Center generally provides free flu shots to all students by appointment. Staff and faculty, however, must pay a $20 fee.

Mazon described the Health Center as a miniature urgent care. The facility is staffed with three certified physicians and includes an on-site lab. It can perform minor procedures and offers a variety of prescriptions to students at reduced costs.

Dr. Tiffany Gee discussed how difficult it can be to see a doctor quickly. Which is why she encourages students to come to the health center to utilize their resources which are included in student tuition. Gee says it is important for them to teach students the importance of their health and to help them.

“I’m excited I’m here. And I hope you guys come see us for whatever help, ailments or even positive affirmations,” she continued. “There’s so much great things here for you guys.”

CalFire was also at the fair demonstrating CPR and fire safety at their interactive table. The Stanislaus County Department of Health was also there to provide information about harm reduction.

Another table had educational pamphlets, free at-home syphilis testing kits and different forms of contraceptives available free to students.

The Health Center is recommended by students because of the easily accessible resources and the cost effectiveness. Beyond fair activities, the center offers over the counter medications and other services at reduced prices that would not be found at other medical facilities.

Lessly Briones (Senior, Psychology) and her roommate came by the health fair to take advantage of free flu shots. She explained that the fair introduced her to various resources and freebies.

“Yes, I would, because it’s cost effective, and I feel like it benefits a lot of people. Just going here, it’s closer and it’s cheaper than a regular hospital,” she responded when asked if she would recommend the resources to other students.

Nary Helen Alanda (Senior) says she found out they do small surgeries such as removing ingrown toenails or removing skin tags when visiting the health center.

She expanded on how beneficial the Health Center can be for students who are in need of cheaper medical attention.

“Especially the pharmacy, because stuff in the pharmacy is so cheap compared to over the counter where you can usually get it. So definitely. I definitely recommend the health center,” Alanda stated.

The Health Center has much to offer to Stan State Students, and students are encouraged to take advantage of the resources, as it comes included in student tuition.
