TURLOCK – The Warriors tennis team was defeated Saturday by the nationally ranked No. 30 Academy of Art University Urban Knights, with a score of 8-1. The Warriors’ sophomore Davina Meza claimed a victory in singles but the team defeat moved the Warriors to a record of 1-9.
Meza battled hard getting the victory over the Urban Knights’ Nina Gajdosikova with set scores: 6-4, 5-7, 10-3.
“We are still learning how to play the big points/break points better. We had our chances especially at the number one and two matches,” head coach Verek Visaraga said.
“One our highlights was Davina Meza. She has defeated three nationally ranked players ranked ahead of her and has really began to mature with her game and she has a great ability to adapt to her circumstances and adjust quickly to get an edge.”
In doubles, Meza and partner junior Mckenzy Harden were served up with a defeat 8-3. Senior Kelsey Chrisco and sophomore Jessica Stokes almost got by with a win, but were defeated 9-7 in what was the closest doubles match all day. Sophomore Kaitlyn Ireland and junior Aubree Brenda were also defeated by a score of 8-0.
The Warriors face UC Davis on Saturday in Turlock.
