BERKELEY- Juniors Andrea Severson and Tina Lane represented Warriors Track and Field as they competed in the heptathlon at the California Multi- Events meet on March 27 and 28. Overall Severson placed sixth, scoring 4,452 points, hitting a provisional mark and Lane placed 16th, scoring 3491 points, which is her highest total of this current season.
The heptathlon is a track and field competition in which female athletes compete in seven different events, which are composed of three running events and four field events to demonstrate their athletic versatility. The seven events consist of the 200-meter, 800-meter, 100-meter hurdles, shot put, javelin throw, long jump and high jump.
“My goals are to stay mentally tough and hit a provisional mark for nationals,” Severson said.
Focused on hitting provisionals, Severson achieved her goal as she set a personal record in each the 200-meter, 800-meter, long jump and high jump. She placed second in the long jump with a 17-feet, 11 inch mark, fourth in the 200-meter with a time of 26.52 and fifth in the 800-meter with the time of 2:22.5. Hitting the provisional mark qualifies her to compete at nationals, as long as she places in the top 20 of the athletes who hit the same mark.
“My throws were not that great, but I know exactly what I need to work on,” Severson said. “I kept a strong mentality through the whole meet which helped me obtain my goal.”
The Warriors track and field team travel to Chico State on April 13 to compete at the Chico Twilight Meet.
