After beginning the season on the road, mens soccer returned to Warrior Stadium to face Cal State San Bernardino. Unfortunately for the Warriors they faced stiff competition as the Coyotes shut out the Warriors 1-0. San Bernardino’s Roberto Mariscal scored the game’s only goal after Warrior goalkeeper Clint Long made a save but was unable to corral the rebound. The Warriors failed to answer back and were only able to generate 9 shots against the Coyotes.
In a Sunday afternoon matinee, spirits were up as Carlos Gavino found the back of the net early for the Warriors. Unfortunately, No. 18 Chico State scored 3 unanswered goals and defeated the Warriors 3-1. The Warriors began the season 0-2 for the first time since 2008, and for the first time in coach Dana Taylor’s era.
The Warriors’ offense has been somewhat stagnant to begin the season and they will look to get things going on the road next week as they travel to face Sonoma State (Sept. 20) and Humboldt State (Sept. 22).
Women remain undefeated
The women’s soccer team began their 2013 campaign with a 5-1 thrashing of Cal State San Bernardino. The Warriors received a goal each from Keshia Lyons, Katelyn Nebesnick, Mikayla Clifford and 2 from Karenee Demery.
The undefeated Warriors continued rolling along as they faced the undefeated Chico State Wildcats. With goals from Tina Benson and Demery the Warriors were able to hand the Wildcats a 2-0 loss. Lewandoski pitched her third shutout in four matches and has only allowed one goal this season.
Demery continues to be red-hot as she scored her sixth goal of the season and the sixtieth of her career.
The Warriors will hit the road for the first time next week as they face Sonoma State (Sept. 20) and Humboldt State (Sept. 22).
