Relay for Life will be back on campus Saturday April 5. This year, 10 Turlock High School teams will join the California State University, Stanislaus Relay for Life.
In past years, Turlock High School students, parents and staff would attend the Turlock community Relay event, typically held at Dutcher Middle School.
However, this year, in an attempt to unite the university with high school youth, Turlock High School will support the CSU Stanislaus event.
Former event chair C.J. Chaney talked about the importance of involving young adults in bringing awareness to cancer.
“High school and college students often believe this is a disease that affects older people,” Chaney said.
“Most likely, there are a couple students sitting next to you in class who are currently in cancer treatment, but just don’t talk about it.”
Current event Chair Brittany Rosengarten expressed her high hopes for the new partnership, hoping that more consistent attendance and higher fundraising numbers will be the outcome. Last year the CSU Stanislaus Relay for Life event raised $18,000.
With the expected participation increase, the event’s coordinators have set their sights higher.
“We’re hoping to raise a lot more money than last year,” Rosengarten said.. “Our goal is $24,000.”
CSU Stanislaus student clubs and organizations are amoung the approximately 30 teams participating.
“Last year our club, Young Americans for Liberty, sold posters and glow sticks to raise money,” Dylan Delhart (sophomore, Political Science) said.
“This year I’m just supporting as an individual, but I’m looking forward to seeing what groups are there.”
