PEER Project of California State University, Stanislaus hosted One Step at a Time April 2, an event comprised of 15-minute walks down a path lined with questions relating to mental and emotional health issues that the LGBTQ community faces.
“There is support,” Dan Thomason, One Step at a Time coordinator, said during the walk. “We want to show our LGBT community that they’re not alone.”
It is the mission of PEER Project to empower students to recognize and support individuals who are at risk on campus. One Step at a Time was aimed at educating students on the emotional health struggles that LGBTQ students encounter because of the discrimination they face.
PEER Project is funded by a grant and is run out of the Psychological Counseling Services department on campus.
Before the event began, students gathered around the PEER Project booth in the Quad to participate. After signing waivers, students were handed sheets of paper with seven questions to answer throughout the activity.
Thomason began the first walk at 10 a.m., leading a group of 11 students towards Demergasso-Bava Hall.
At the conclusion of the walk, participants were asked to keep their question sheets, which listed resources for LGBTQ youth and the number for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline.
