Construction started Jan. 6 near the Mary Stuart Roger’s building in order to replace the campus sewage lift system.
The current station has had multiple problems moving sewage off campus and into the city system the past several years.
“The existing sewage lift station is 45 plus years old,” Melody Maffei, Vice President of Facilities Services, said. “It’s past its life expectancy.”
Once the level of sewage reaches a certain point, a lift is powered and moves the sewage upward through pipes called the sewer force main.
Planning for the project began in 2011, according to Maffei. Its funds were bid-savings from the Science I Renovation Project, a Lease Revenue Bond.
The project is expected to be completed mid-May.
