The Stanislaus State Women’s Soccer team was named California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) champions with an overall record of 10-3-4 and 7-2-2 in the CCAA, the warriors became CCAA Co-Champions with Sonoma State after their big win on October 27th.
Alexis Brewah (junior, Kinesiology) was named CCAA Newcomer of the Year. The Stockton native, who came to Stan State from San Joaquin Delta College, finished the season 2nd in shots, goals, shots on goal, assists and points in the CCAA. Brewah, who plays forward for the Warriors, shared her favorite highlights from the season.
“The most memorable part of the season was definitely our Monterey Bay game,” she said. “To be able to win a game where we were down a player for almost an entire half shows how much heart is instilled throughout our team.”
She said she felt that that game was a turning point for her team.
“That game brought us even closer as a team and was a big reason as to why we were able to ultimately continue our win streak and win the title,” Brewah said.
Another big reason for the team’s success was CCAA Midfielder of the Year, Sabrina Cabrera (junior, Kinesiology). The redshirt from South Dos Palos was 4th in shots, 5th in goals, 2nd in game winning goals, 4th in shots on goal and 4th in points, which led to her Midfielder of the Year award.
Cabrera explains how special this years team is and why they were able to be so successful.
“Not only are we family on the field but also family off the field,” she said. “When it comes to academics, we all help each other, support each other.”
She added that something that makes the team special is that they all get along and bond as one, so no one is left out.
“We have the same mindset,” Cabrera said. “All of us want the same thing, to grow, to win, to compete.”
Six members of the team were named on the All CCAA Women’s Soccer Team. Brewah and Cabera, along with their individual awards, were First Team members. Jackzeny Mancilla, who scored the winning goal in the last regular season game, was an honorable mention honoree. The other three players selected were goalkeeper Alexia Estrada and seniors Jocelyn Lopez and Summer England.
When Jackzeny Mancilla scored the goal to put the team up 2-1 against Cal State East Bay, the team stormed the field knowing if they could stop the other team from scoring for the next three minutes they would win the title.
“When I made the goal I felt so relieved and just so proud to be part of a team with strong, determined, and passionate women,” she said. “I wouldn’t have done it without my team.”
Brewah added that she was relived after the final whistle blew and the team was crowned champions.
“We had to win our last game and to be down 1-0 and come back to win 2-1, it felt so much greater,” she said.
The Warriors are 7th in NCAA Division II Women’s Soccer West Regional Rankings. The CCAA Champion title is the Warrior women’s soccer team’s first since 2013.
