Building family communication is a difficult task for many people. Communication begins as children, learning to build those emotions together from parent to child.
Nisreen Rashid, professor of child development at CSU Stanislaus, says “The most important aspect of a healthy relationship is creating that safe space for effective communication.”
Uma Charan (senior, Communications) expresses how family communication can be fixed through hard work and time.
“It relies on getting external help from somebody,” Charan said.
Understanding how to communicate with your family can help build healthy, long lasting relationships that don’t harbor resentment.
Naomi Carrera (senior, Marketing) is very close to her family.
“I always reach out to my parents or my sisters first because I feel like they know what’s best for me, they know who I am,” she said.
Family communication is important because the people who surround you the most are the ones who will understand you the best. If communication with your family has been a struggle, external help such as therapy can make a difference. But building family communication starts with willingness on both sides to do so.
