The CSU Stanislaus Women’s tennis team played their first three matches of the season in Oahu, Hawaii in early February. This was their first time traveling to Hawaii since February 2020.
The Warriors’ weekend in Hawaii started out successfully with a 7-0 sweep over Chaminade University. The women quickly acclimated to the warmer temperatures and high wind speeds as five of the six singles matches ended in 6-0, 6-0 victories for Stan State.
The Warriors then faced number four ranked Hawaii Pacific, who were West Regional champions in 2021 and PacWest Conference champions in 2019. The Warriors fought hard and won some games but were unable to come up with any match wins, losing 0-7.
On their final day, the women played against Hawaii Hilo, another tough team. The Warriors showed their strength right off the bat, winning the number one doubles match 6-2.
This helped them secure the doubles point, wherein two out of three doubles matches must be won. The Warriors battled on every court but were only able to come up with one more win at number one singles.
The final score was 2-5 against Hawaii Hilo. “This was a good start of the year,” said head coach Verek Visaraga. “These matches helped us look for opportunities to improve and as we come into March, will help us win,” he added.
Despite the loss, any amount of points won will help the Warriors get closer to their goal of reaching the PacWest Conference championships, being played in Surprise, Arizona in mid-April.
The Warriors will be returning to the courts on Saturday, March 11 to face Fresno Pacific University for their first home match of the season. The remainder of the tennis schedule for the 2023 season can be found here.
