Warriors baseball took on the Cal State Los Angeles Golden Eagles. It was clear, sunny, near-perfect weather at Warrior Baseball Field March 26. The Warriors were fresh off a 2-1 win the previous day and were eager to tie the series.
“Just execute pitches. I wasn’t really looking for a strikeout.” Anthony Ramirez (sophomore, Criminal Justice) commented shortly after the game. He delivered the last strike, sealing a win, and ending the series vs CSU Los Angeles.
With urgency, the Warrior’s plan was clear by the 5th inning. Run the score up as soon as possible. Sophomore Ryan Leonesio and Jacob Baker scored during the bottom of the 5th. Making the score 10-2, with the Warriors in the lead by a gap.
Then the Eagles decided to make a stand. The Warriors were up 10-6, but the bases were loaded. The Golden Eagles only had one out progressing to 10-7 with the help of William Drozdowski. A bit of silence could be heard from the crowd as unpredictability loomed.
With a string of scores and no answer from the Warriors to make the lead 10-7 by the bottom of the 9th. Anthony Ramirez was presented with a two-out, bases loaded, 10-7 score, at the bottom of the 9th. The pressure dawned on Ramirez, but he prevailed. Striking out Kaydn Victorian-Young, to hold off a landslide victory from Cal State LA.
Anthony Ramirez prevailed under a list of circumstances. “Just trying to keep it nice and easy. Let my defense behind me work.” Said, Ramirez.
Ramirez definitely showed growth in character and his ability to maneuver through stress.
The series ended in a tie with the Golden Eagles. The Warriors are currently 19-15 and on a two-game win streak. They finished their series on April 15 at Warrior Baseball Field against the San Francisco State University Gators with the Gators taking the game 5-1. The Warriors’ next series begins on April 21 against Cal Poly Panoma Broncos.
