Residents of CSU Stanislaus’ student housing enjoyed a night of “Happy Cat Month and Games” on September 5th, 2023, in the Village Game Room.
The event ran from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., allowing student residents to play an assortment of video games, board games, card games, and pool to socialize with other residents.
The event was put together by student housing Peer Academic Coaches (PAC) Jennifer Sanchez (Senior, Psychology, Child Development) and Noah Moore (Senior, Psychology), with assistance from Housing and Residential Life resources.
“A Peer Academic Coach serves residents by coaching individuals on how to adjust to college life and academics,” Sanchez explained.
“We’re also great with other resources and resource management,” Moore said. “We help out students with time management skills or just how to register for classes.”
The theme of the event was chosen in honor of National Cat Month taking place in this month of September. The two beloved cats that live in and roam Stan Housing, DC (Dorm Cat) and Charlie “tied the event together,” said Sanchez.
Upon entering the game room, each attendee could choose their own cat ears headband to wear.
Two students sat on the sofa and played Mario Kart 8 for Nintendo Switch. Several students and PACs gathered in a circle to play a couple of rounds of Uno. 5 students played a game of pool, while others decided to relax on the sofa and chat.
Neon signs on the wall with sayings such as “Game On” and “Village Game Room” illuminated the space with hues of blue and orange. The cracking of billiard balls cut through the sounds of leisurely conversation. Mario Kart sound effects and rhythmic music from artists such as Travis Scott, Bad Bunny and Tame Impala bounced about the room.
Numerous events such as these are arranged and facilitated every month for students living on campus. This gives students the opportunity to meet and interact with other Village Warriors, as well as get to know their PACs and Resident Assistants (RA).
“The whole role of the PAC is connecting the community,” Moore added, “My goal is to be able to get people in Village 1, 2 and 3 and create big mingling groups.”
Moore shared that he is currently building a Mean Girls-themed study/movie night in which Housing students attend the Village Café to study from 6 to 8 p.m. and then watch the movie Mean Girls from 8 to 10 p.m..

Make Your Own Tote on September 14 from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m.,
Fall Carnival on September 15 from 4 to 6 p.m.,
Mario Kart Tournament on September 18 from 6 to 8 p.m.,
Friendship Bracelet making on September 26 from 6 to 7 p.m. and
Archery Tag on September 28 from 5 to 7 p.m.
Student housing resident and attendee, Logan Richardson (Junior, Psychology), shared why this event caught his interest.
“Cats and board games are two of my favorite things. Also, I think meeting people on campus… is a big part of college,” Richardson said. He added that he has attended at least a third of all Housing events held thus far.
