St. Patrick’s Day at California State University, Stanislaus is normally a day filled with students donning their green attire for the day. Instead, students had the opportunity to see comedian Zach Sherwin from Epic Rap Battles of History perform. Not only was he interactive with students but also did his research on CSU Stanislaus and incorporated into his act. According to his promo video he stated that he was not sure how to pronounce Stanislaus, but knew it sounded a bit like “Panama.”
Student Regan Pareira (freshman, Liberal Studies) ended up being picked on by the comedian a few times throughout the show.
“I liked being called out. I like attention,” said Pareira.
It seemed that Sherwin did read the crowd well and was able to relate to the students. He also did his share of cyber stalking CSU Stanislaus’ website.
“I felt that he really read the audience well and interacted enough with them to get on that personable level rather than just be up there performing,” Lauren Farrell, ASI Campus Pride Coordinator said.
“He worked the campus into his act a lot from what he has observed from our campus. I thought that the Alma Mater he did was interesting, I never would have guessed that those things were on our website.”
Sherwin proudly claims that he prefers to write his own rap songs, but he could not help but do a cover to Drake’s song Only. The students enjoyed the cover and were excited when he ended his show with Albert Einstein’s rap.
Originally the event was to be held at the Warrior Grill, but due to some complications, it ended being moved to the Game Room. It seemed appropriate since he performed in front of green wall to stick to the St. Patrick’s Day theme.
Sherwin was a good sport, consistently interacting with the students. He also brought some memorabilia for students to purchase and he could personally sign for them. Overall, it was an eventful St. Patrick’s Day for the students of CSU Stanislaus.
