Women’s basketball
The California State University, Stanislaus women’s basketball team could not get much going for homecoming on Friday night at the Ed and Bertha Fitzpatrick Arena as they were defeated by the Cal Poly Pomona Broncos by the final score of 63-46.
The Broncos ( 14-5, 12-3 CCAA) were lead by their senior center, Jada Blackwell, who was just pounding it all night racking up 28 points and 9 rebounds.
One thing the Warriors (6-13, 4-11 CCAA) have to be proud of is that this was a huge improvement from their previous meeting with the Broncos as they were defeated earlier this season by the score of 86-59. The Warriors were lead by their sophomore forward, Riley Holladay, who scored 10 points with 9 rebounds. The bench was a huge bright spot for our Warriors as they outscored the Bronco’s bench 19-8 with the help of sophomore Ana Burch, who had seven of those points.
The Warriors will host UC San Diego before going on the road next week to Humboldt State and Cal State San Bernardino.
Men’s basketball
The CSU Stanislaus men’s basketball team was no match for the Cal Poly Pomona Broncos at the Ed and Bertha Fitzpatrick Arena as they also lost by the final score of 77-48.
The Warrior students packed the arena for homecoming, but that did not phase the visiting Broncos as they ran a defensive press that the Warriors (13-7, 10-5 CCAA) could not figure out and started off on an early 10-0 run in the first half.
The Warriors were lead by senior guards Shey Mataele, who scored 11 points, and Chris Read, who had nine points.
The high point of the night actually came during a break in the action when a Warrior student hit a half court shot on his first try winning himself free pizza for a year.
The Warriors will host UC San Diego before going on the road next week to face Humboldt State and Cal State San Bernardino.
