On Oct. 6, 10 East Kitchen and Tap House hosted their second annual beer garden brew event with California’s own Firestone Walker Brewing Company. Fellow co-founder David Walker, known as “the Lion,” was in attendance to promote his beer as well as his passion.
As long as you had a valid ID to show that you were of legal drinking age, you were given a wristband and granted free admission to enjoy what Firestone Walker Brewing Company had to offer.
The event was held in the parking lot and featured a cool beer enthusiast atmosphere with good music, a seemingly infinite drink supply, signs bearing the brewery’s name strung out in every direction and apparel with the brewery’s logo visible on every 10 East employee.
It was a chilly, yet relaxing spot to be on a Friday evening, and many of the event-goers were thrilled to have attended.
“You can’t beat free admission,” Sydney Riley (senior, Communications Studies) said. “I enjoyed the beer and they had some cool music playing that made for a really fun atmosphere.”
“It was fun to have a local brewery host an event in Turlock,” Esther McConnell (senior, Criminal Justice) said. “Not much goes on in this small town, so it was an interesting event.”
An array of their craft beers were offered, including their signature “805” and even some rare beers that are not sold in stores. Walker was manning the outdoor bar and pouring his life’s work into the glasses of strangers that kept coming back for more.
Two menus of drinks were offered, one being the standard menu offering their four signature beers and the other being the VIP, which for an extra fee gave you access to their rare beers like the “Stickee Monkee” and “Walker’s Cuvée.”
I decided to opt for the signature brews and picked the “Union Jack IPA” as my beer of choice. The beer had a crisp, hoppy taste, common for India Pale Ales (IPA), and was quite succulent.
The other beers looked very tasty as well, so I had to gain some insight on what to try out next.
“I tried the ‘Easy Jack IPA’,” Riley said. “It was pretty smooth for an IPA, not too hoppy, and tasted very yummy.”
Firestone Walker Brewing Company has gained recent popularity over the last few years and more of their beer can be found at local stores. The brewery was founded by Walker and Adam Firestone (aka “the Bear”) in 1996 and currently operates out of Paso Robles.
