Anyone walking through the quad on Nov 5 between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. probably couldn’t help but notice Stan Fresh stands. Students in red polos gave a friendly welcome to passers-by and answered questions about their variety of brightly-colored vegetables displayed on a series of tables.
The biweekly farmers market event is run by Ag Ambassadors – students from two different classes of farm management and leadership and labor issues in agriculture. Each class is split into groups based on their different set of responsibilities. Some students harvest the food from the campus’ sustainable garden and other students are in charge of sales and marketing. The students grow and sell everything from peppers and kale to flowers and basil.
The idea of Stan Fresh, which gives students the opportunity to practice their skills in a real-world setting, was originated by Dr. Oluwarotimi Odeh, Agricultural Studies Department Chair.
“We just want to make sure that we use Stan Fresh as the model of what the typical agribusiness is like… Stan Fresh is really just an educational lab to enhance student learning,” Dr. Odeh said.
