As classes become harder to enroll in and sections get cut throughout departments, it is great to see one of our own championing their way through the system in stellar fashion.
Jason Barnett, a senior double-majoring in Mathematics and Music, has managed what seems to be the impossible task of graduating after four short years with two, count them, two Bachelor degrees from California State University, Stanislaus.
What does it take to become such a master of the collegiate system? It is not an easy job, and Jason admits it required a class load of about 22 units each semester, as well as the occasional summer course. Advanced Placement classes in high school also helped to pave the way down a speedy set of semesters.
Living in on-campus housing was also beneficial, as it made the process of going to school a smooth and easy one.
“I really enjoyed being in Housing,” Barnett said. “It makes things a lot easier and hassle-free and it’s all inclusive.”
Indeed having a printing resource, laundry facility and the support of friends all in one’s home is quite convenient.
Barnett also credits Dr. Jung-Ha An’s guidance and assistance in the Mathematics Department as being a major factor in his success, although he appreciates all the professors in the department as well.
“They’re always willing to help or even just talk when needed,” Barnett said.
In the Music Department, Jason plays the oboe and will be graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Music Performance. He has been a member of the school’s Wind Ensemble and Orchestra for all four years of his college career.
Of course, such hard work is balanced with recreational activities when possible. Barnett can be frequently seen playing in the school’s Intramural Ping Pong games. He also likes to make videos in his spare time. These include parodies, original music, and video game remixes. He is currently working on a parody of “Like a Boss” with a Star Wars twist.
So what’s his next step after successfully completing his four year stint at CSU Stanislaus? Barnett is currently considering his options for Graduate school at either University of California, Davis or Riverside.
“I’m excited for the next step in learning and the independence of it,” Barnett said.
