TURLOCK – DJ Arellano and Colton Beatty came through in the final at-bats for the Warriors as California State University, Stanislaus beat the Pioneers from California State University, East Bay 3-2 to close out the series.
“It all started when G (Garrett Wright) somehow made it to first and we just kept it rollin’, after Beatty got that hit I knew it was going to come down to me and I was ready,” Arellano said. “Seeing G do whatever it took to get to first and Beatty coming up clutch it just made me want to get it done that much more, it was weird, there wasn’t once fear, just complete certainty and after was just amazing.”
Garrett Wright led off the ninth inning, pinch-hitting for Ross Gonsalves as he singled through the right side on a 1-2 count and the go-ahead run on the plate. Justin Manci then grounded out to first but managed to move Wright over to second safely with only one out.
Eli Davis then popped out for the second with Wright stranded at second when Colton Beatty then came up and cracked one to right field, picking up the RBI-single and tying it with two outs on the first pitch.
“I just knew that if I could somehow get on base and give us a chance then the guys behind me would come through and finish the job,” Wright said. “Scoring the tying run was a great feeling because now we were in the position to push another run which happened to be the game-winner.”
Jordan Long then walked and DJ Arellano stepped up with two outs and on a 0-1 count singled to the left field line as he brought in Beatty to score the game winning run.
Phil Quade started the game for the Warriors as he pitched six innings, allowing only one run on nine hits as he walked three and struck out two, however he did not pick up the win.
Coming in to relief was Anthony Gotelli who threw two innings, allowing one unearned run on one hit as he picked up his third victory of the season and is now, 3-1 with a 2.89 ERA.
“I felt really good today, I felt like I had some good zip on my fastball and was throwing both off speed pitches for strikes which were huge,” Gotelli said. “I really like coming out of the pen after being a starter in junior college because it gives me a chance to shut the game out or at least keep us there 2-3 times a weekend.”
Justin Manci went 1-for-4 as he drove in the first of three runs early, as Eli Davis and Joe Medeiros each had multiple hits to lead an offense with 10 hits for the game.
“In order for us to keep this up we have to keep getting better every day, we must learn from every game,” Manci said.
The Warriors are now 9-9 overall, 6-6 in CCAA and will travel to CSU Dominguez Hills this upcoming weekend to face off the 5-15, 2-10 CCAA Toros in a four-game weekend series, which will begin Friday at 3 p.m., resume Saturday with a doubleheader and end Sunday with an afternoon game at 2 p.m.
