As Relay for Life approaches, a small group of students are taking the initiative to raise awareness for the event in a way never before seen at California State University, Stanislaus.
“We’re gonna be the first, and we’re gonna be the best,” Cori Stubbs (senior, Communication Studies) said. “We want to help people feel like they’re contributing and get more people involved.”
To do this, a group of Communication Studies majors decided to develop a video titled “Purple Glove Dance.” The video is designed to raise awareness by spotlighting students and faculty from all over campus getting their groove on.
The group wants to bring everyone together, from every department and from all walks of life, to show Warriors uniting over a common cause and in a way that can be shared with the masses through websites such as Youtube and Facebook.
They invite everyone to participate by putting on a pair of purple medical-style gloves and dancing for the camera. Others are asked to create a sign, which reads: “I relay for _________.” Filling in the blanks on these signs brings home the reality that everyone is impacted by the tragedies of cancer in some way or another.
“Relay for Life hasn’t had much participation before; we want to change that,” Lauren Charles (senior, Communication Studies) said.
The video is meant to inspire students to join the cause. With its planned release sometime in the beginning of April, it will be just in time to further spread the word about the 24-hour Relay for Life being hosted on campus April 21-22 from 11 a.m. to 11 a.m.
Anyone with questions or wanting to be on film is highly encouraged to contact the Purple Glove Dance team on Facebook or by email at [email protected].
