Something sweet is rolling its way through Turlock.
Retired retail manager and mother of four Troyce Fraga is more commonly know in Turlock as the Cupcake Lady. With the help of her husband, Fraga has begun sharing her deep passion for baking with the Central Valley by making delicious cupcakes and selling them daily from her big, pink truck.
“Cupcakes are my thing, and I’ve been wanting to do something like this for awhile,” Fraga said.
According to Fraga, the idea to go into the cupcake-selling business came from her lifelong love for baking that began in her childhood. She grew up in a family of eight children and was encouraged at a very young age to help out with the cooking and baking. Since then, cupcakes have remained one of Fraga’s most favorite treats to make. She loves that cupcakes can be simple, are not too big of a dessert, and that they can be made in a variety of ways with several different kinds of flavors.
“They’re special, and I like the individuality about them,” Fraga said.
Now, almost 90 different cupcake flavors later, Fraga continues to create new cupcake flavors every week for her thriving business.
The Cupcake Lady truck operates Monday through Friday, except on Wednesdays. Every morning, the truck is packed with approximately 650 freshly baked cupcakes and then makes six routine stops throughout Turlock per day.
Each week, the Cupcake Lady truck features five new cupcake flavors. Some of the many unique flavors that have been sold are Lemon Meringue, Lucky Charms and Girl Scout’s Samoa. Fraga said that the most popular cupcakes are the Red Velvet and Maple Bacon.
The cupcakes are made with all natural ingredients and sold at affordable prices. Regular sized cupcakes are sold for $2.27 and mini-cupcakes at $1.25. According to Fraga, her cupcakes are the biggest cupcakes for the cheapest price in Turlock. Occasionally, cake pops, whoopie pies and push-pops made of cake are also available for purchase. The Cupcake Lady currently accepts cash only.
The truck can also be rented for occasions such as birthday parties and weddings.
So far, business for the Cupcake Lady has been booming.
“We tried selling cupcakes the other day at Latifs and before we could even get the window open there was a line of about thirty people waiting,” Fraga said. “Within 30 minutes everything in that truck was gone.”
California State University, Stanislaus students have fallen in love with the delectable, inexpensive treats as well.
“I like the Maple Bacon cupcake the best because it’s different and unique, just like the Cupcake Lady,” Amber Lantz (senior, English) said. “The cupcakes are a lot cheaper than other places in Turlock.”
